Sweet Lassi vs Salted Lassi: What Is the Difference?
Sweet lassi puts yogurt and sweetness first
Sweet lassi blends yogurt with sugar and may include cardamom or other aromatic flavourings. It can be thick and dessert-like, but dilution varies by household and serving style.
Salted lassi is savoury and refreshing
Namkeen lassi uses salt rather than sugar and may include roasted cumin or other savoury seasonings. The yogurt tang remains more obvious because it is not covered by sweetness.
The yogurt determines much of the texture
Thick full-fat yogurt produces a richer drink, while thinner yogurt needs less added water. Blend the yogurt smooth first and adjust dilution gradually rather than starting with a large amount of water.
Ice changes both thickness and flavour
Ice makes lassi colder but dilutes it as it melts. If using plenty of ice, begin with a slightly thicker base and make the final salt or sugar adjustment after chilling.
Mango lassi is a separate fruit variation
Adding mango contributes sweetness, fruit solids and extra body, so it is not simply sweet lassi with flavouring. Ripe mango can reduce the amount of added sugar the drink needs.
Which lassi should you choose?
Choose sweet lassi when you want a creamy, lightly dessert-like drink. Choose salted lassi for a savoury accompaniment to a rich meal, and mango lassi when ripe fruit is intended to lead the flavour.
